Will My Breasts Sag After Breast Reduction?

Getting a breast reduction can bring life-changing results. If your breasts are overly large and heavy, they can pose significant problems with your health by causing shoulder and back strain and pain. Sagging can also negatively affect issues with your wardrobe and appearance. If you’ve had a breast reduction, it can open many doors including the opportunity to wear clothes you’ve always admired, enjoy activities like running, and look forward to a life without back and shoulder pain.

It can be normal to think that sagging will happen after your breast reduction, but this isn’t necessarily true. By following a few steps, you can make sure you enjoy your results for the long term.

Follow Your Plastic Surgeon’s Instructions

During the first few months after your surgery, it’s extremely important to follow your plastic surgeon’s instructions. This can help promote the healing process and prevent potential infection and injury. Your healing can take up to 18 months, although you’ll be ready to return to your regular schedule within a week or two.

Your scars will gradually fade over time, but your plastic surgeon may recommend you use certain cream or silicone strips to help them fade faster. You’ll need to avoid wearing underwire bras too soon as they can impede your healing. Be careful with high-impact exercise and weight training. You should check with your plastic surgeon to see when you’re cleared to resume those types of activities.

Take Care of Your Health

It’s also important to take good care of your overall health. Eating well and engaging in low-impact exercise daily is imperative. You should consume whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Of course, you should also avoid smoking. Not only can it harm your health and damage and age your skin, but it can also impede the healing process.

Take Proper Care of Your Skin

You should also take good care of your skin while you heal. When you take measures to prevent wrinkles, you can keep your skin more youthful. This can help make your surgery results look even better.

To begin, avoid tanning as it can prematurely age your skin – this means don’t sit out in the sun or use tanning beds. However, when you are outside in the sun, make sure to use sunscreen to protect against harsh UV rays.

Secondly, make sure to prevent weight gain. Keeping track of what you eat and ensuring that you drink plenty of water can help you to maintain your healthy weight. Weight gain, on the other hand, can adversely affect your new, smaller breasts and cause them to change, requiring another procedure.

Finally, be smart and aware of your body. If you feel that something isn’t right with the results of your breast reduction, be sure to reach out to your plastic surgeon. Also, keep realistic expectations from your surgery – your breasts will still continue to age just like the rest of your body, so a breast lift may be needed in the future to reverse sagging.
